A mother staring at her daughter when she announced she's moving in with her.
My husband and I just bought our first home a few months ago. It's a modest place with two bedrooms. One is ours and the other we set up as a guest room for when family visits. My mom

The mother announced it… she didn't even ask if she could move in?

decided to sell her house a few weeks ago and she's closing next month. She announced she's moving in with us for a while.

"A while": she's not going anywhere...

When we asked what 'a while' means she said until she finds something else she likes. She mentioned she's not actively
looking for a new place right now and wants to take her time. This feels like an indefinite stay.

We all love our parents, but it's important to set boundaries with family.

We love my mom but we just moved into our own space. We were really looking forward to having our privacy and
establishing our own routine. We also planned on eventually using the guest room as a nursery down the line.

This is the biggest issue: if one of the two homeowners is not happy, then is a complete no.

My husband is uncomfortable with this arrangement too. We haven't told her no directly because we don't want to hurt
her feelings or make her feel like she has nowhere to go. She doesn't have a huge support system apart from us.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? How do you set boundaries without causing a huge family drama? We want to help her but we also need our space.

MostAssumption9122 No, mom. Thats it. She did not ask.
Rude_Parsnip306 She puts her house on the market and finds somewhere else at the same time. Or she can sell her house and rent an apartment while she looks for a new place. No need to move in with you.
Fair_Discipline_1875 Put your foot down now or regret it later. If you allow mom to move in, start the rent on day one.
OrdinaryImportance94 Your mum doesn't just get to decide she stays with you. That's not how it works. Unless, you give in to her entitled behaviour.
coralcoast21 It will ruin your marriage. She won't leave and your husband's resentment will fester. I'm going to make two bets here, and I could certainly be wrong. 1- This isn't the first time your mother has attempted to ruin a big thing in your life. 2-Deep down she doesn't like your husband.
MissMurderpants Tell her no. Or you tell her you will get a rental agreement. There is monthly rent. There is a deposit. There will be chores. She will follow the rules. Or hahaha mom, that's Soooo funny. You are such a jokester.
An empty room full of boxes, as a couple just bought the house and is moving in.
Inner-Confidence99 Tell her No, Mom. We just got our own place and want privacy. Since you sold your house you can rent an apartment or AirBNB. We are not comfortable with you staying while we start this chapter of our lives.
ZTwilight Tell her now before she sells her house. She won't like it. Be prepared for that fact.
EconomicsWorking6508 Family can be so greedy. Instead of being happy for you, so many times the person views it as "what's in it for me?" If she moves in you will be providing her housing whether free or charging rent to her. This is a big turning point in your life. Which direction will you go?
peanutandbaileysmama "No mom you may not move in" lets practice that again. "No mom you may not move in" keep repeating that. She sold her house, she has the money so she can buy another one or stay somewhere else.
